DSCF2362Elephant Back…again.
Most of the day was spent retyping my journal into my laptop so I can eventually share it with the world…if I can ever get this elusive internet that I’ve been hearing so much about.  Just as I was going to throw in the towel on the day and go back to bed, my forest ecologist buddies asked me if I wanted to hit the Elephant Back trail and I of course told them that it was waaaaay too easy for me and that I would love to. So we went and laughed our butts off. I can’t remember a more entertaining hike. We invented a game where we matched up a famous actress with the tree species that possesses similar characteristics–because forest ecologists, strangely enough, find trees quite sexy. For example, my girl Charlize Theron would be a coastal redwood because she is tall, strong, majestic, charismatic and truly a sight to behold. Julia Roberts would be a douglas fir, Drew Barrymore would be a juniper and so on. When we returned from our hike we started writing down our extensive list and worked on it for most of the night. The Germans and Andrew were also consulted and of course had many other actresses to add and some grievances to air about our pairings. All day, we were wracking our brains trying to find the perfect match for a sugar pine. She would have to be the complete package: well-built, tall, with enormous cones, easy on the eyes, a little dirty yet sophisticated, hearty, versatile, etc… And Andrew walks in from his 5.5 hour ride from Casper and immediately pulls out Christina Hendricks from Mad Men. He hit the nail right on the head in mere seconds! Such a great day of laughter mixed, strangely enough, with ecology. It’s good for my soul!
